Incoming Principal Letter

Dr. Melanie Johnson
Incoming Principal
Dear Springdale Park Families, Staff, and Community,
It is with great excitement and deep gratitude that I introduce myself as the incoming Principal of Springdale Park Elementary School, pending approval by the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education on August 10, 2026.
I am thrilled to return to SPARK. In 2020, I had the privilege of serving as Program Administrator and opening the Kindergarten Center, an experience that allowed me to witness firsthand the extraordinary culture that makes this school so special. I have always carried SPARK close to my heart—not only as an educator, but as a parent. My husband and I are longtime residents of the Virginia-Highland neighborhood, and both of our daughters were SPARK students. This school has helped shape my own family, making this opportunity especially meaningful.
I recognize that this transition comes after the departure of a principal who was deeply respected and genuinely loved. Change can bring uncertainty, especially when it follows strong leadership. I want you to know that I have tremendous respect for the foundation that has been built at Springdale Park. My commitment is not to change what makes SPARK exceptional, but to honor its traditions, celebrate its successes, and work alongside our incredible staff, families, and community to help our school continue to thrive.
For more than 20 years, I have been proud to serve Atlanta Public Schools in a variety of roles—including Teacher, Instructional Coach, Assistant Principal, Program Administrator, and most recently, Program Director for Priority Schools. Each experience has strengthened my belief that exceptional schools are built through strong relationships, high expectations, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to every child.
One of my greatest passions is STEAM education and preparing students to think critically, solve authentic problems, and develop the skills needed for an ever-changing world. As an Assistant Principal, I had the privilege of helping lead a school through Georgia Department of Education STEM and STEAM certification as well as Cognia STEM Certification. I look forward to building upon the innovative learning experiences that already make SPARK such a remarkable place for students.
As we begin this new chapter together, my promise is simple: I will listen first, lead with integrity, and always keep students at the center of every decision. I believe the strength of Springdale Park lies in its extraordinary people—our dedicated educators, engaged families, supportive community, and remarkable students. Together, we will continue fostering a school where every child is known, challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their greatest potential.
I cannot wait to reconnect with familiar faces, get to know those who have joined the SPARK family since I was last here, and begin this journey together. Thank you for welcoming me back. It is truly an honor to serve this incredible community once again.
I look forward to all we will accomplish together.
With gratitude and excitement,
Dr. Melanie Johnson
